Endocrinology
Diabetes and endocrine disease demand, super-specialty training, private practice, industry and AI.

Endocrinology as a career
Endocrinology is a super-specialty rather than a direct NEET-PG broad branch. It sits downstream of eligible feeder specialties and covers diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, pituitary, adrenal, bone and reproductive endocrine disorders.
Clinical demand
ICMR-INDIAB estimated 101 million people with diabetes and 136 million with prediabetes in 2021. NFHS data also show rising self-reported thyroid disorders. The patient pool is therefore large, chronic and longitudinal, with strong overlap with obesity, cardiovascular and renal disease.
Work settings
| Setting | Typical role | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Tertiary hospitals | Complex endocrine disease, inpatient consultation and multidisciplinary care. | Referral networks and tertiary infrastructure matter. |
| Private hospitals / clinics | Diabetes, thyroid, obesity and endocrine outpatient practice. | Strong chronic-care and follow-up model. |
| Independent practice | Longitudinal endocrine and diabetes care with relatively low procedure dependence. | Local competition and referral relationships drive volume. |
| Academia / research | Metabolic disease, thyroid, obesity, bone and endocrine trials. | Research opportunity is substantial. |
| Pharma / devices / healthtech | Diabetes, obesity, thyroid, CGM, insulin delivery and medical affairs. | One of the strongest specialty-industry interfaces. |
Practice economics
Endocrinology is largely longitudinal and outpatient, with recurring follow-up rather than procedure-heavy revenue. Private practice can be attractive in high-burden markets, but competition from general physicians and diabetologists is real. Obesity therapeutics, CGM and technology are expanding the clinical and industry ecosystem.
No generic salary range is shown unless a dated source supports the role, geography and sector.
Training capacity
State and college counts are shown only where the source rows can be checked exactly.
Higher-training and focused routes
Eligibility rules can change. The current NMC/NBEMS/NEET-SS bulletin governs formal feeder eligibility.
Research, industry and teaching
AI applications and workflow
AI is increasingly used for diabetes risk prediction, CGM analytics, insulin-delivery algorithms, retinal screening and decision support. The field is therefore more likely to become technology-intensive than technology-replaced.
Regional variation
ICMR-INDIAB provides state-level diabetes and metabolic-risk estimates. These data need to be read alongside specialist supply, private-market maturity and access to diagnostics and devices.
Disease burden, workforce, infrastructure and private-market conditions are reported separately; one is not used as a proxy for another.
